Emo stripped to voice and acoustic guitar: confessional lyrics delivered in a cracking, intimate vocal over fingerpicked or strummed chords. Bedroom-recording rawness, breathy sincerity, and unguarded heartbreak. The genre's diaristic core laid bare without distortion, every quaver and lyric foregrounded.

History

Crystallized when Chris Carrabba's Dashboard Confessional turned solo-acoustic emo into a phenomenon with 'The Swiss Army Romance' (2000) and the MTV Unplugged set. The Get Up Kids' acoustic side project New Amsterdams and acoustic emo cuts from peers extended the stripped-down, singer-songwriter strain through the 2000s.
