Rap organized around a concept, persona, joke, or niche audience rather than authenticity or street reportage. Beats range from cartoonish bounce to grimy boom-bap and trap; what binds the family is the bit: a comic premise, a masked alter-ego, a chiptune gimmick, an esoteric obsession, or a viral hook engineered to spread.
History
As soon as rap went commercial in the early 1980s, novelty and comedy records followed, from Biz Markie's clowning to the dance-fad 12-inches of the bass era. The 1990s added persona acts and parody (Weird Al). The internet age supercharged the family: meme rap, nerd-niche chiptune, chap hop, and horror-sampling trap all turned a single concept into the whole point of the song.
