Nerdcore centers on gaming, sci-fi, comics, tech culture, fandom, and internet subculture, usually with technically competent, self-aware bars and a heavy DIY spirit. It is often funny, but its best versions are more affectionate than novelty.

History

MC Frontalot helped codify the term and scene, while MC Lars, YTCracker, Mega Ran, Schaffer the Darklord, Adam WarRock, and others expanded it across conventions, blogs, and indie networks. The lane proved rap could be culturally specific without pretending to be universal—or pretending to be cooler than it was.
