Rap performed entirely in character: a masked alter-ego, comic-book supervillain, or fictional persona with its own backstory, voice, and worldview. The conceit shapes everything, from a shifting vocal register to themed sci-fi or surrealist beats, letting the artist disappear into a recurring fictional self rather than rapping as themselves.

History

Kool Keith's extraterrestrial Dr. Octagon (1996) set the template for the rap alter-ego as full character. Daniel Dumile built an entire universe of personas, the masked MF DOOM, time-traveling Viktor Vaughn, and monster King Geedorah, across the 2000s. The masked-villain conceit endures through inheritors who rap from inside an invented identity.
