Folk Pop / Americana Pop
familyStarted 1962Peak 1965-1975Last big hit still active
Acoustic, roots-leaning pop built on folk melodies and plainspoken singer-songwriter lyrics. Fingerpicked or strummed guitars, mandolin, banjo, fiddle and dobro sit under close harmonies and warm, conversational vocals. Country and Celtic colorings, gospel uplift and chamber strings widen the palette, but organic instrumentation and a melody-first songcraft anchor every corner.
History
Grew from the early-1960s folk revival as Greenwich Village and Laurel Canyon writers softened protest folk into radio-friendly melody. Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel and the Byrds proved folk could chart; Laurel Canyon, Nashville crossover and Celtic revival each branched off. Roots and Americana strains kept it alive into the streaming era.
