Gospel Folk Pop
tagStarted 1969Peak 1971-1979Last big hit still active
Folk pop lifted by gospel: call-and-response refrains, church-choir harmonies, hand-clap rhythms and uplifting, faith-tinged lyrics over acoustic guitar and warm organ or piano. Hopeful and communal, it trades hellfire for grace and singalong uplift, blending spiritual sincerity with hummable pop melody. Vocals swell from intimate verse to congregational, harmony-rich chorus.
History
Took shape around 1970 as folk-pop writers folded gospel uplift into secular-friendly hits. Cat Stevens' 'Morning Has Broken' and Ocean's hymn revival crossed over; the Jesus-movement era spread acoustic praise. Amy Grant bridged Christian and pop markets in the 1980s, and Brandi Carlile later carried gospel-folk warmth into modern Americana.
