Narrative-driven folk pop where the lyric is a full short story: characters, scenes and a turning twist set to melodic acoustic arrangements. Fingerpicked guitar, modest strings or piano and an unhurried vocal serve the tale, with hooks that land on a refrain or a closing line. Detail-rich and cinematic, it values plot and place over abstract sentiment.
History
Emerged in the late 1960s as singer-songwriters foregrounded storytelling. Harry Chapin's narrative epics and Gordon Lightfoot's ballad-tales defined it; Don McLean's sweeping allegory became a standard. Suzanne Vega's vignette writing and later The Decemberists' literary tales kept the narrative folk-pop tradition vital.
