Folk Pop

The melodic core of the family: folk-derived tunes dressed for pop radio. Strummed and fingerpicked acoustic guitars, light percussion and occasional strings frame clear, hummable hooks and warm two- and three-part harmonies. Lyrics stay literate but accessible. Less rootsy than Americana, less raw than protest folk, it prizes songcraft and tight, radio-length arrangements.

History

Took shape mid-1960s when folk-revival acts and the Byrds' jangle merged with British Invasion melody. Simon & Garfunkel and Peter, Paul and Mary brought it to the top of the charts; The Mamas & the Papas added sunshine harmony. Donovan and later Belle & Sebastian and The Lumineers carried the template forward across decades.
