Bossa Nova / Latin Lounge

familyStarted 1957Peak 1962–1968Last big hit still active

This family centers on soft Latin sophistication: nylon-string bossa guitar, light hand percussion, brushed drums, airy or intimate vocals, electric piano, and jazz-rich chords moving at relaxed dance or drift tempos. The prevailing mood is romantic, urbane, and coastal, with cigarette-smoke elegance on one side and sunlit café ease on the other.

History

Formed around the Rio de Janeiro bossa nova revolution and its international crossover through Verve, A&M, and global lounge markets, the family absorbed older bolero and samba-canção traditions while also feeding jazz, exotica, hotel-lounge repertory, and later downtempo Brazilian revival; from João Gilberto and Jobim to Walter Wanderley, Sérgio Mendes, and Bebel Gilberto, it became one of the most durable bridges between Latin music, jazz harmony, and easy-listening atmosphere.
