Americana / Alt-Country / Roots Country
familyStarted 1968Peak 1995–presentLast big hit still active
This family pulls country back toward roots pluralism: folk intimacy, rock grit, blues feeling, gospel undertow, bluegrass texture, and literary songwriting. The production can be acoustic or electric, but it usually values grain, room sound, and emotional honesty over polished format compliance.
History
Though its roots go back to Parsons, The Band, Prine, and roots-rock traditions, the modern ecosystem cohered in the 1990s around alt-country, No Depression, and later the Americana Music Association. From Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch to Jason Isbell and modern roots artists, the family became the refuge for country-adjacent music too country for indie and too indie for country.
