No Depression-Lane Alt-Country

tagStarted 1990Peak 1993–1999Last big hit 2005

This is 1990s alt-country in its most scene-specific form: rough guitars, roots melodies, punk residue, and an explicit conversation with the No Depression universe of magazines, labels, clubs, and touring bands. The tone is often restless, anti-slick, and proudly imperfect.

History

The phrase "No Depression" became shorthand not just for Uncle Tupelo's debut but for an entire alternative country culture. Son Volt, Whiskeytown, The Bottle Rockets, Old 97's, Blue Mountain, and many adjacent acts gave the movement a social center before "Americana" became the larger umbrella term.
