Soul Americana

Soul Americana adds gospel warmth, R&B phrasing, muscular rhythm sections, and often horn-friendly harmonic sensibility to roots-country songwriting. The result is earthy rather than slick: church and juke joint shaking hands over a Telecaster.

History

As Americana expanded beyond folk-country definitions, Black roots traditions and southern soul became more visibly central to the field's self-understanding. Artists such as Yola, Chris Stapleton, Valerie June, The War and Treaty, Mavis Staples, and others helped define a soulful strain distinct from both strict country and slick pop-soul crossover.
