Singer-Songwriter Country

In the Americana context, singer-songwriter country foregrounds writerly perspective over format conventions: conversational melodies, acoustic or lightly electric backing, and lyrics full of detail, irony, and moral ambiguity. The performances often feel lived rather than performed.
History
This lane joins the Nashville/Texas songwriter tradition to the later Americana ecosystem. John Prine, Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Rodney Crowell, Lucinda Williams, and many successors made country songwriting a literary art while keeping its melodic plainness and vernacular power.
