Roots country emphasizes lineage more than polish, drawing directly from honky-tonk, folk, bluegrass, gospel, and blues. The arrangements may be acoustic or electric, but they usually foreground organic ensemble feel, narrative songwriting, and stylistic memory.
History
The term often functions as a broad descriptive umbrella rather than a rigid scene label, but it became especially useful as late-20th-century artists pushed back against heavily commercial country. It links Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, and many later Americana figures who work from country's older frameworks.
