Global / Regional Pop
A cross-cultural umbrella for regional pop scenes outside the Latin, K-pop, J-pop, Afropop and Caribbean orbits: glossy, hook-driven music sung in dozens of languages, fusing local melody, rhythm and instrumentation with Western pop production. Think string-laden Arabic ballads, Bollywood playback anthems, Turkish dance-pop and pan-Pacific grooves under one tent.
History
As satellite TV, MTV affiliates and later YouTube and streaming flattened borders from the 1980s onward, local pop industries in the Arab world, India, Turkey, the Pacific and beyond professionalized and absorbed Western studio craft. The result was a patchwork of regional star systems—each huge at home, periodically crossing over abroad—that this family gathers as 'world,' 'global' and named-region pop.
