Pacific / Island Pop
tagStarted 1992Peak 1996-2012Last big hit still active
Sun-soaked pop from the Pacific—Polynesia, Aotearoa, Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga—fusing traditional log-drum (pate) rhythms, ukulele, lush vocal harmony and island-language lyrics with reggae lilt, R&B and hip-hop. Warm, mid-tempo and groove-forward, equal parts ancestral chant and laid-back contemporary radio pop with an oceanic, sing-along feel.
History
New Zealand's OMC scored a worldwide smash with 'How Bizarre' (1995); Opetaia Foa'i's Te Vaka brought log-drum-driven Polynesian pop to WOMAD stages worldwide from the mid-'90s. A reggae-pop strain—Katchafire, Fiji, J Boog—and harmony groups like Te Vaka kept island pop central to South Pacific charts and the diaspora into the streaming age.
