Early Rock & Roll / Roots Rock

familyStarted 1948Peak 1954-1963Last big hit still active

The foundational explosion where rhythm & blues, jump, gospel harmony, boogie piano and hillbilly twang collided into the first rock and roll. Backbeat-driven, horn- or guitar-led, built on twelve-bar blues and AABA pop forms. Slapping bass, honking saxes, hammering pianos, teen-romance vocals and raw amplified energy define the era's sound.

History

Born from late-1940s R&B and jump blues, the family ignited mid-1950s when Black R&B crossed to white teen audiences via DJ Alan Freed, who popularized the term. Sun, Chess, Specialty and Atlantic cut the seminal sides. Payola scandals, the draft and tragedy thinned the first wave by 1959, but the template seeded everything that followed in rock.
