The classic mid-1950s template: a hard backbeat under a twelve-bar blues, ringing electric guitar or pounding piano, slapped upright or electric bass, and exuberant teen-aimed vocals. Tight two-to-three-minute singles built on call-and-response riffs, hand-claps and sax breaks, balancing R&B grit with bright pop hooks and shout-along choruses.
History
Crystallized in 1954-55 as R&B crossed into mainstream pop. Bill Haley's 'Rock Around the Clock' and Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' (1955) broke nationally; Alan Freed's broadcasts spread the name. Sun, Chess and Specialty drove the sound. The 1959-60 lull (deaths, scandals, Elvis's draft) ended the first wave, but the form became rock's permanent bedrock.
