The whole sonic snapshot of the decade's rock singles: slap-back echo, hiccup vocals, tic-tac bass, sax honks and twangy Telecaster leads pressed onto 45s. Spans the raw shouters and the smoother teen idols, unified by a danceable backbeat, AABA or twelve-bar structure, and a youthful innocence captured in mono with tape-saturated warmth.

History

An umbrella for the 1954-59 boom as rock seized the American charts. Sun, Chess, Specialty, Atlantic and Cadence shaped its range, from Elvis's Sun sides to teen-idol pop. Television (Ed Sullivan, American Bandstand) carried it nationwide. The first wave faded around 1959-60, but '50s rock became the eternal reference point for revivalists and oldies radio.
