Pop Standards / Traditional Vocal Pop

familyStarted 1900Peak 1940-1960Last big hit still active

The pre-rock and classic-era heart of pop: songbook melody sung over live orchestras and big bands, with diction, swing phrasing and lush arranging prized over backbeat. Strings, brass, reeds and piano frame an unhurried lead vocal. Polished, romantic, timeless; the sound of supper clubs, ballrooms and the American songbook.

History

Born from Tin Pan Alley publishing and Broadway around 1900, the tradition matured through 1930s dance bands and 1940s-50s vocalists who centered the singer over the orchestra. Rock and roll displaced it commercially after 1955, but the songbook endured via reissues, swing revivals and standards covers, keeping the lineage continuously active into the present.
