Vocal Pop
tagStarted 1935Peak 1945-1960Last big hit still active
Singer-driven traditional pop where the voice is the whole event: clear tone, careful enunciation, expressive interpretation of a lyric, often in close-harmony or solo settings over discreet orchestral or combo backing. Less about the band, more about phrasing and storytelling. Warm, melodic, intimate yet polished.
History
Emerged as 1930s-40s band vocalists and harmony groups foregrounded the singer over the orchestra, supported by the microphone's intimacy. It peaked through the 1950s on standards and ballads, then fed forward into adult pop and standards revivals, with interpreters continuing to record songbook material in a vocally centered style into the modern era.
