Show Tune Pop
tagStarted 1925Peak 1945-1965Last big hit still active
Pop built from the Broadway and stage-musical songbook: show tunes lifted from their shows and recorded as standalone orchestral-vocal pop. Big melodic arcs, theatrical dynamics, sweeping orchestrations and a belt-friendly lead. Grand, melodic and dramatic, bringing the footlights to the pop chart.
History
As Broadway musicals churned out hit songs from the 1920s onward, pop vocalists routinely covered them, and original-cast albums turned show tunes into a chart staple by the 1940s-50s. The form peaked mid-century alongside the golden age of musicals and remains active through cast recordings, standards singers and ongoing pop interpretations of stage repertoire.
