The crossover zone where pop songcraft meets R&B phrasing and soul harmony: melismatic vocals, gospel-rooted chords, walking or programmed groove bass, lush keys and finger-snap percussion. Romance and intimacy drive the writing, wrapped in glossy radio-ready production that swings from quiet-storm hush to up-tempo swagger.
History
Born as Motown and Philly soul softened into pop, the family crystallized when 1980s urban-contemporary radio, new jack swing, and quiet storm formats made Black pop the chart center. The 1990s hip-hop-soul and contemporary-R&B booms, then the 2010s alt-R&B and trap-soul waves, kept it perpetually mainstream and endlessly remodeled.
