Girl Group R&B-Pop

tagStarted 1990Peak 1994-2005Last big hit still active

Female vocal groups blending tight R&B harmonies with radio-pop hooks: swung new-jack and hip-hop grooves, layered call-and-response vocals, attitude-driven lead trades and snapping percussion. The sound balances sass and sweetness, with empowerment, romance and friendship writing built for both the charts and the dance floor.

History

Grew from 1990s contemporary R&B as producers built harmony-rich female trios and quartets for crossover pop. TLC and En Vogue defined the funky, confident template; Destiny's Child became the genre's commercial apex around 2000, with Xscape and 3LW extending the harmony-and-attitude formula.
