Contemporary R&B Pop

tagStarted 1989Peak 1995-2008Last big hit still active

The studio-modern mainstream of R&B: heavily produced, synth-bedded grooves with layered backing vocals, swung hi-hats, and silky lead performances built for both radio and the bedroom. It spans slow jams and mid-tempo cuts, defined by clean digital production, melisma, and polished romance-and-devotion lyrics.

History

Coalesced from new jack swing and the slick urban-contemporary production of the late 1980s and 1990s. Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey and Brandy refined the harmony-rich studio sound; in the 2000s Alicia Keys and Usher carried it forward, defining the dominant R&B pop language of the CD and early-download eras.
