History
Coalesced from new jack swing and the slick urban-contemporary production of the late 1980s and 1990s. Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey and Brandy refined the harmony-rich studio sound; in the 2000s Alicia Keys and Usher carried it forward, defining the dominant R&B pop language of the CD and early-download eras.
