Deathcore fuses death metal's blast beats, tremolo riffing and guttural growls with metalcore's chugging breakdowns and hardcore-style two-step rhythms. Tunings drop to drop-A/B or lower, often on seven- and eight-string guitars, while production is brick-wall loud with triggered, clicky kick drums and scooped, percussive guitar tone. Vocals alternate cavernous lows, throat-shredding highs and the signature gurgling 'bree' pig-squeal. Songs lurch between hyper-fast blasting and crushing half-time breakdowns engineered for maximum mosh impact, the breakdown itself the genre's defining payoff.
History
Deathcore coalesced in mid-2000s America as hardcore-rooted bands absorbed death metal heaviness: Despised Icon (Montreal) and Job for a Cowboy's 2005 EP 'Doom' lit the fuse, while California's Suicide Silence, Carnifex and Whitechapel (Knoxville) built the canon. Sumerian and Century Media signed the wave; MySpace and breakdown-heavy touring spread it. Suicide Silence's 'The Cleansing' (2007) became the era's biggest debut. After a mid-2010s lull, the style was revitalized around 2019-2021 by symphonic and tech-leaning acts like Lorna Shore and Shadow of Intent, returning deathcore to festival mainstages worldwide.
