Classic Soul
familyStarted 1959Peak 1965-1975Last big hit still active
Gospel-bred, blues-soaked soul sung live from the chest: stacked horn sections, churchy Hammond B-3, in-the-pocket rhythm sections, and singers who testify rather than croon. Sweat, melisma, call-and-response, and real emotional stakes over a snapping backbeat and tambourine.
History
Grew out of 1950s gospel and rhythm-and-blues as singers like Ray Charles and Sam Cooke carried church fervor into secular records. Crystallized at Stax (Memphis), Motown (Detroit), Chicago and the Muscle Shoals/Memphis axis through the 1960s. Defined Black popular music until funk, disco and quiet storm reshaped it; revived faithfully by 2000s retro labels.
