The live, package-tour and theater spectacle of classic soul: a hot house band running nonstop, a string of vocalists trading the stage, choreographed dance steps, MC patter and a roaring crowd. Captured on famous live albums, it's soul as high-energy communal event, with sweat, screams and showmanship.
History
Built on the chitlin'-circuit and Apollo Theater tradition, revues toured under banners like the Motown and Stax/Volt packages, while James Brown's relentless band defined the form on 1963's 'Live at the Apollo.' Stax took its roster to Europe in 1967. The revue model was revived faithfully by Daptone's Super Soul Revue in the 2010s.
