Red Dirt / Texas / Heartland Country

familyStarted 1972Peak 1998–2015Last big hit still active

This family is live-band country from Texas and Oklahoma scenes: regional grit, songwriter seriousness, red-clay realism, dancehall momentum, and independence from Nashville's center of gravity. The sound ranges from acoustic storytelling to bar-band country rock, but it nearly always feels road-tested and place-specific.

History

One root runs through Austin and progressive/outlaw country; another through Stillwater's Red Dirt scene centered on The Farm and figures such as Bob Childers. By the 1990s and 2000s, the family formed a powerful regional ecosystem of venues, festivals, charts, and touring circuits that launched Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Jason Boland, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Turnpike Troubadours, and many others.
