Quiet Storm / Smooth R&B
familyStarted 1975Peak 1980-1995Last big hit still active
The hushed, after-dark wing of soul: slow-to-mid tempos, brushed or muted drums, warm Rhodes and electric-piano beds, jazzy seventh chords, and silky lead vocals that prize restraint over belting. Saxophone, fretless bass, and reverb-soft guitar drift through arrangements built for low light, intimacy, and romance.
History
Named for Smokey Robinson's 1975 album A Quiet Storm, the sound was codified in 1976 when Howard University's WHUR-FM launched the 'Quiet Storm' late-night format under intern Melvin Lindsey. Stations nationwide copied it, shaping a romantic, adult-leaning R&B lineage that ran through the 1980s-90s and still anchors love-song radio.
