Smooth R&B is polished, romantic R&B built around warm vocals, gentle grooves, clean keyboards, soft percussion, bass that moves without crowding the singer and arrangements designed for late-night radio or adult playlists. It overlaps quiet storm and adult contemporary R&B, but it is usually less jazz-lounge and more song-centered. The emotional world is intimacy, apology, devotion and slow-burn desire rather than club release.
History
Luther Vandross, Anita Baker and Sade shaped the smooth adult R&B vocabulary in the 1980s, while Babyface, Toni Braxton, Brian McKnight, Maxwell, Joe, Kem and later H.E.R. carried it through radio ballads and neo-soul-adjacent material. The style thrived on urban AC formats, wedding playlists and albums where vocal tone mattered more than novelty. Smooth R&B survives because calm sophistication is always useful inside a genre built on feeling.
