History
Emerging from African American jazz and dance-band traditions in New York, Kansas City, Chicago, and beyond, big-band and swing standards became the dominant popular-music language of the 1930s and early 1940s through radio, ballrooms, films, and labels such as Victor, Columbia, Bluebird, and Decca; although the original mass market declined after World War II, the repertoire endured through repertory orchestras, holiday and cocktail revivals, Las Vegas polish, and the 1990s neo-swing boom.
