Ballads / Power Pop Ballads
familyStarted 1960Peak 1985-2005Last big hit still active
Emotion-forward pop where one voice carries the whole song. Hushed piano or acoustic verses swell into string-banked, drum-cresting choruses; key changes lift the final refrain skyward. Lyrics dwell on heartbreak, devotion and vows. The arrangement exists to frame the vocal's biggest note.
History
Rooted in Brill Building heartache and Sinatra-era torch song, the pop ballad matured through 1970s soft pop and exploded in the 1980s power-ballad era. Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey turned the climactic key-change ballad into a chart institution across the 1990s, and the form still anchors awards-season and wedding playlists today.
