K-Pop Ballad

The big-vocal weepie of the idol world: piano or strings building to a belted, key-change climax, often an OST tie-in. Arrangements stay lush but restrained until the final chorus explosion; vocals prize power, vibrato control, and high-note money shots. Lyrics are heartbreak-and-longing; many are drama soundtracks engineered to score a crying scene.
History
Korean ballad tradition (Lee Sun-hee, Shin Seung-hun) fused with the idol system as labels showcased their strongest vocalists in solo ballad eras and lucrative drama OSTs. The K-drama export boom of the 2010s made the idol-ballad-as-soundtrack a global pipeline, with idol vocalists (Taeyeon, Baekhyun, Lee Hi) and OST specialists dominating the format.
