Zouk is French-Caribbean dance-pop built from Guadeloupean and Martinican rhythms, Haitian cadence/compas influence, big synthesizer arrangements, horn-like keyboard lines, creole vocals and sleek studio production. Early zouk was fast, carnival-facing and proudly Antillean; later zouk love slowed the tempo into romantic, glossy ballad-dance territory. Its appeal comes from bright rhythm, polished harmony and creole pop confidence.
History
Kassav' created the template by combining Antillean rhythm, studio modernity and a full-band identity that could compete internationally. Jacob Desvarieux, Georges Décimus, Jocelyne Béroard and Jean-Claude Naimro shaped the classic sound, while Zouk Machine, Edith Lefel, Patrick Saint-Éloi and Tanya Saint-Val extended it into pop and ballad forms. Zouk became a key export across Francophone Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.
