History
Youth-choir gospel has deep roots in Sunday-school and junior-choir programs, but it became a recording force through ensembles like Walt Whitman & the Soul Children of Chicago (founded 1981) and the Mississippi Children's Choir, whose 1992 debut spotlighted young soloists. Kirk Franklin's young-adult group God's Property took the youth-choir sound multi-platinum with 'Stomp' in 1997, proving the format's crossover power, and GMWA youth mass choirs nurtured countless future stars. The tradition continues in church youth departments and school gospel choirs worldwide, functioning as gospel's talent pipeline and a vehicle for reaching younger congregations.
