Worship Hook Rap is structured around a big, sung, worship-style chorus that anchors rapped verses, so the hook is the congregational payoff and the verses fill in testimony or exhortation. Production ranges from anthemic pop-rock to trap, but always builds to a soaring, repeatable refrain designed for crowds to sing. Vocals alternate between a rapper and a strong worship-style singer (sometimes the same artist). The mood is uplifting and communal, tailor-made for youth services and radio.
History
Worship hook rap became a formula as CHH sought crossover in the late 2000s and 2010s, borrowing the sung-chorus-plus-rap-verse structure from mainstream pop-rap and marrying it to worship writing. Lecrae's collaborations with worship vocalists, TobyMac's radio hits, and Social Club Misfits' hook-forward songs typified it, and worship-conference culture rewarded singable choruses. It overlaps worship rap and Christian pop rap, and is one of the most radio-successful shapes in the family.
