Worldbeat is pop or rock that foregrounds global rhythms, instruments, languages and collaborations. It often combines Western song structures with African, Latin, Celtic, South Asian, Middle Eastern or Indigenous elements. The term belongs to the world-music industry era, so it carries both useful and problematic baggage: it can describe generous collaboration, but it can also flatten many traditions into a marketable global sound.
History
Worldbeat emerged alongside the 1980s world-music boom, with artists such as Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Talking Heads, Youssou N'Dour, Deep Forest and Afro Celt Sound System reaching broad international audiences. Labels, festivals and compilation culture turned regional music into a global marketplace. Later musicians inherited the palette but often rejected the old category, preferring specific scenes, collaborations and diaspora identities.
