New age fused with world and ethnic music: traditional instruments and vocal styles from Asia, the Andes, the Celtic world, Africa and the Middle East woven with synths, pads and gentle rhythm into calming, atmospheric instrumentals and semi-vocal pieces. It samples or evokes chant, folk melody and ethnic percussion while keeping the soothing, contemplative new-age intention, ranging from meditative drift to lightly danceable ethno-groove. The mood is exotic, spiritual and serene, celebrating global tradition through a relaxation lens.
History
World-inflected new age grew from 1980s globe-spanning artists — Kitaro's Silk Road, the German band Cusco's Andean evocations, and Osho-scene world-fusion players like Karunesh — and exploded commercially in the early 1990s when Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby" (1992) and Enigma's chant-sampling hits merged ethnographic sound with electronic new age to global sales. Karl Jenkins's Adiemus and Celtic artists such as Loreena McKennitt and Clannad broadened the field. Though the sampling raised debate over appropriation, the style shaped the ethno-ambient, global-ambient and world-wellness lanes that followed.
