Western Swing blends rural fiddle-band repertory with swing-era rhythm and improvisation, using fiddles, steel guitar, piano, bass, drums, guitar, and occasionally horns. It is fast, bright, and dance-built, with a buoyant attack that makes country sound suddenly very well acquainted with Saturday night.

History

It formed in the Texas–Oklahoma dancehall circuit through bands led by Milton Brown and Bob Wills, who transformed string-band material by adding jazz phrasing, blues coloration, and modern rhythm sections. The style later influenced honky-tonk, country jazz, Texas dancehall, and revival groups from Asleep at the Wheel onward.
