West Side Chicago blues is brighter, sharper, and more guitar-dominant than older South Side barroom blues. It often features stinging lead tone, soul-informed vocal intensity, dramatic minor-key material, and more overtly expressive electric-guitar solos.
History
A newer postwar generation reshaped Chicago blues on the West Side, especially through Cobra Records and related club scenes. Otis Rush, Magic Sam, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, Luther Allison, and Son Seals pushed the guitar further forward, adding soul urgency and emotional attack that later fed modern blues guitar and blues-rock alike.
