West Coast R&B Blues is the blues side of California rhythm and blues: small horns, piano, smooth vocals, danceable grooves, and guitar lines that carry blues feeling inside pop-ready arrangements. It sits between jump blues and early soul, often more urbane and radio-conscious than down-home electric blues.
History
The style grew from Los Angeles and Oakland independent labels, Central Avenue nightlife, and postwar Black migration. Charles Brown's mellow club blues, Johnny Otis's revue-band records, Roy Milton's jump hits, Amos Milburn's boogie R&B, Little Willie Littlefield's piano, Big Mama Thornton's commanding blues shouting, and Jimmy McCracklin's Oakland singles defined the lane. West Coast R&B Blues fed rock and roll, doo-wop-adjacent R&B, soul-blues, and later retro-swing and jump revival.
