Classical waltz is a triple-meter swirl built from the familiar bass-chord-chord pulse, long arching melodies, and a floating but slightly tilted sense of motion. It can be intimate, glittering, or monumental, ranging from ballroom grace to symphonic intoxication and ballet elegance.
History
Emerging from central European social dance, the waltz became both a fashionable ballroom form and a major classical idiom in Vienna, Paris, and Russia; the Strauss dynasty popularized its public brilliance, Tchaikovsky embedded it in ballet and symphonic narrative, and later composers treated it as either a sign of elegance or, in works like La Valse, as a haunted memory of a vanished world.
