Vocal theatre ballads place emotional climax at the center: broad melodic arcs, lyric clarity, controlled build, and often a high-stakes release that can move from speech-like intimacy to ringing projection. The accompaniment may be lush, but the voice carries the scene’s moral weather.
History
As musicals increasingly relied on character-defining ballads and recital culture lifted those songs out of the theatre, a large canon of stage ballad performance emerged; performers such as Streisand, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, Mandy Patinkin, Lea Salonga, and Audra McDonald represent the recital-and-recording afterlife of that material.
