Vocal House puts the singer at the center of house music, using verses, choruses, gospel runs, diva hooks, call-and-response and emotional ad-libs over a club beat. It can be soulful, pop-facing, garage-influenced or piano-driven, but the voice carries the identity more than the drum pattern alone. The best vocal house turns repetition into catharsis: one phrase or chorus becomes a shared dance-floor statement. Compared with instrumental house, it translates club feeling into song memory.

History

House was vocal from the beginning, drawing on disco, soul, gospel and R&B singers as much as drum machines. Chicago, New York and New Jersey producers used singers to make house spiritual, romantic, humorous and commercially reachable. Robin S., CeCe Peniston, Crystal Waters, Alison Limerick, Ultra Nate, Barbara Tucker, Kings of Tomorrow and The Shapeshifters represent different eras of the vocal-house tradition. Later pop-house and EDM repeatedly returned to vocal house because a strong topline can carry house beyond specialist DJ culture.
