Virtual Choir / Modern Choir

Virtual choir assembles individually recorded voices into a digitally synchronized ensemble, creating a choir sound that is edited, spatialized, and mixed rather than heard in one room. The result often combines classical choral blend with studio precision, cinematic reverb, and a strong sense of collective intimacy at a distance.

History

Eric Whitacre's Virtual Choir projects defined the format, proving that geographically dispersed singers could form a compelling modern choral ensemble online. The model expanded rapidly through pandemic-era singing communities, remote youth choirs, church choirs, and hybrid media projects, turning "modern choir" into both a technological method and a new social model of classical participation.
