History
The style formed as postwar records and television made a broad range of vocal hits part of everyday domestic life, from teen-safe romance to adult standards-inflected pop; Doris Day, Patti Page, Jo Stafford, Perry Como, Johnny Mathis, and Bobby Vinton are central touchstones, and later oldies programming as well as compilation culture helped reframe their sound as “vintage” pop long after it had ceased being contemporary.
