Verismo Opera pushes opera toward raw immediacy, compact dramatic pacing, heightened declamation, and characters drawn from ordinary or socially grounded life rather than noble legend. Its sound is hot-blooded and direct: shorter lyric blooms puncture tense orchestral realism, and climaxes arrive with knife-edge theatrical urgency.
History
The movement took shape in Italy around the late 19th century, especially through Mascagni and Leoncavallo, and then bled into Puccini, Giordano, Cilea, and others with varying degrees of realism and lyric refinement. It did not erase bel canto inheritance so much as roughen and intensify it, making opera feel closer to modern prose drama, journalism, and human nerves.
