Urban California Blues

History

The style formed during wartime and postwar migration, as Black communities expanded around defense work, port cities, and entertainment districts. T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulson, Charles Brown, Johnny Otis, Jimmy McCracklin, Big Mama Thornton, Sugar Pie DeSanto, and Robert Cray each represent different phases: swing-blues elegance, jump R&B, Oakland street blues, blues shouting, soul-blues, and contemporary polish. Urban California Blues became a durable alternative to Chicago dominance and helped define modern blues as club music for integrated national audiences.
