Union Song
Located in 1 route
Union song is the anthem wing of labor folk: blunt refrains, broad melodic arcs, and lyrics designed less for subtlety than for coordinated lungs and raised signs. The instrumentation can be minimal to nonexistent because the real arrangement is the crowd.
History
Union songs grew with organized labor’s need for chants, anthems, and narrative songs that could make solidarity emotionally legible. Some came from hymn tunes refitted with labor words, some from folk standards, and some from newly written material by organizers and movement songwriters. The sub-genre remained central from coal-country and garment-worker struggles through revival-era labor activism and has continued to be revived whenever workers discover that management rarely issues a singable chorus on its own.
